Why Shedding Old Friends is Important Alex Hormozi sheds friends every season of his life. He grows quickly because he doesn't hold onto things long. He thinks about his life in three to five year seasons. He sheds friends who don't provide him value. He stopped being in contact with high school and college friends. Relationships are Transactional There is an exchange in every relationship. Relationships are either reinforced or punished. The strength of the relationship is how long you're willing to wait for the next reinforcement. At some point, if there's no positive reinforcement, you cut off the relationship. People get weird about keeping relationships that don't serve them because of societal stories. Labels and Identity Labels are the identities we say about ourselves. People in your past have the identity that they know you as and will beat that label into you. The best response to someone who says you've changed is to say, "Yeah, you have." The amount you like or love someone is directly proportional to what you're willing to give up to maintain the relationship. Utility is an exchange in every relationship. Encouragement and Shedding Identities You want people who encourage you in the behaviors that you want to be like. Shedding identities is a core part of entrepreneurship. You have to be willing to say, "I am no longer this way. I will no longer behave in this way." Many people around Alex weren't willing to pay the price that he was willing to pay for the things he wanted. He shed friends who wanted more from him than he was willing to give. Why shedding old friends is important We only have limited time, focus, and energy to pour into things. If we don't put all our energy in one direction, it's scattered and we don't move as fast. It's important to prioritize relationships that bring value to our lives. Slowing down communication with someone can naturally fizzle out the relationship. Being honest with friends about how you feel can lead to better relationships or the end of a Mickey Mouse relationship. Joining communities to find like-minded people Once you have weeded out old friends, join communities with people who have the same goals as you. Understand that volume is the answer and time is the ingredient to rise in that community. Gain more status and start hanging out with people who are at the top of that community. Leapfrog into other communities to meet rare people who are trying to go all the way with you. It's okay to have many friends over different seasons, and things don't need to be forever to be good.
